China now unofficially has the world's fastest supercomputer. The Tianhe-1A hits 2.507 petaflops, which easily crushes the Cray XT5 Jaguar located in the United States.
The reason why this news is important is because it shows that China's processor technology might surpass the technology in the United States, meaning that Chinese chips could replace US built chips.
What are your thoughts on this?

Oh boy... Come on US, show the world you still have some innovation. Invent something new that can surpass this thing.
It is located in China but the CPU's are still made by Intel.
I think it just adds to the long list of things that we will end up depending on China for. We shouldn't look at it as such a bad thing, though. But then again I don't have a love affair with the idea of the U.S. being #1 all the time. I'm just happy to be here :)

I actually highly doubt this. Recently in Canada this electrical engineer created a micro processor chip that is tiny as hell but has about over 200 gigahertz. marvelous isn't it? xD

i never knew thats what super computers look like..if chinese technology does surpass US's i wonder if it'll be cheaper? I bet US is going to work hard to try and prevent it though

China is taking everything over, not just by quantity, but slowly by quality also. It's totally reasonable to think they'll have the best chips in the world.

oh man i saw this earlier. I'm not surprised to see this at all. Won't have a huge effect on silicone valley for a bit but i have a feeling that will change in the coming years. As much money as we put into china they are going to start really surpassing us in alot of fields.
That's big, but at least US owns the next 3 supercomputers below it :P

Well, anything that pushes the art of computing will benefit the human race as a whole, but at the cost of anti-globalization leanings.
Personally, I think that anyone can carve out a niche somehow no matter who "took their jobs", so I say if the Chinese are making genuinely better, faster chips, and there aren't any ideological differences like the usual touchy subjects of child and/or dissident prison labor for manufacturing, then they deserve to get the business and make the money.
After all, that's added incentive for American researchers and electrical engineers to develop something revolutionary, as well. In this case, competition can be healthy.

Computing is computing, regardless of location. And this is still unofficial... A note on the last super computer go round, I feel Cray cheated, from what I remember, it should have been the roadrunner system to be #1.

Your article is diabolical. The processors they used were Intel XEONS!! Not Chinese. In fact, NOTHING on that computer was Chinese. The GPUs were from Nvidia.

China is scary, everything about them is on the upswing: 1 billion people, a developing space program, monopoly on the mining of rare earths... and now they have the fastest supercomputers. I guess it's only a matter of time before they overtake the US as the world's superpower.
