Update: Windows Server is up and running... now I'm thinking about installing Ubuntu Server

As an update to my post last week, I have Windows Server 2008 R2 up and running on my spare computer at home.  I've barely gotten around to messing around with it, but since a lot of you suggested that I do the Linux server, I have that stuck in the back of my head.  I'm pretty familiar with Windows Server, but there's always the intrigue of learning something new (this is why I also run OSX).

Now I'm thinking that I should go the Linux route?  Is it fairly simple and easy to maintain?  What are your thoughts?

DEFINITELY go Linux. There's a learning curve to get the hang of terminal, but after you've caught onto that, it's pretty amazing what you can do with it. AND IT'S FREE. Good luck! :)

Ubuntu is nice ,but you gotta be really familiar with it because it's really impossible to install programs into it and etc.

I never tried linux

cool story bro

I've never had a linux server. The OS itself is a bit hard to use, but once you get over the learning curve it's amazing.

honkhonkpt said...

Eh, never really been much a Linux fan. It might suit you well, though! Only one way to find out...

killerkun said...

will you have 2 servers or will you just change the OS?

Dennis said...

ohh cool havent heard about ubuntu server before.

I've actually never used Linux. If you do try it out, let us know how you like it!

Brandon said...

I've heard it's fairly simple, but unfortunately I have no knowledge in that area.

linux is funnier in my opinion. freethefish makes me lol everytime

Lots of love for Ubuntu!

I enjoy Ubuntu.

What could happen if you try?

I think Linux should be fairly easy to maintain and setup. Lots of help forums for any problems you have and most flavors are very friendly with old hardware.

Cpt Pownzor said...

from what ive heard of linux server they are fairly easy to use and to maintain..plus a wicked cheap option

Anonymous said...

I you want stability, go with the Linux server. Nuff said.

Torey Taylor said...

I've never really used Linux, I've had a few friends who have and they all tend to like it, very basic and memory usage is low.

David Davidson said...

I've generally heard more positive things about Linux but I haven't done it myself so...

FrostedHeretic said...

You tell us, you are a mac man! There is two things that linux/unix has that others don't: History and Philosophy. Knowing both suddenly makes things alot easier. Have fun!

Johnny Boy said...

Go for it can't hurt to learn a new OS and I hear you can tinker quite a bit with Linux so should be very interesting.

Drackar said...

Depends on how important this server is to you. And wither or not you can take the time to learn a new system...and replace it if you don't like it.

matt.just matt. said...

what are you using the servers for?

Banks said...

servers are shiney and go zap zap

Willow said...

I've never ran an actual Linux server myself, but those of my friends that have say it's easy to setup and work with.

Liv said...

I've never tried it

Astra said...

first time you do linux it can be a bitch to set up, but once its set up and you get the hang of it, you'll never willingly go back to windows

melinko said...

do it you will be surprized esp with the gnome interface the shit runs so smooth. only reason i dont run linux is alot of music software doesnt work on it yet

KTOTHES said...

Yeah yeah. Ubuntu has awesome names for their versions.

happybuffet said...

I found it very simple and straightforward. You just have to understand that it's an entirely new system, and that you must take a different approach to setting things up.

Kartoffeln said...

Yep, always Linux, keep away from Microsoft.

Linux all the way man. It is way more robust

I thought about running WS 2008 or maybe a Linux ftp. I can't decide. Maybe you could write a pro and con when you're done? I have a windows only network and think an ftp server would work better than windows for serving files. I know that sounds strange but network drives refresh too slowly. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

linux ist the best for a server

Ubuntu is pretty much GNU/Linux with training wheels IMO. But if you're just getting started with GNU/Linux it'll certainly be the easier option. Good luck!

Too complicated for me ^^

no idea, didnt like ubuntu

Edward said...

Linux computers require a lot of tinkering, at times. Unfortunately there's no "official" Linux tech support. On the other hand, Ubuntu forums tend to be filled with intelligent, helpful people who can point you in the right direction. It can be complicated, but I certainly enjoy it. Go for it.

PlanetBen said...

I say give it a try. Its pretty easy to get up and running. A little tougher to learn the ins and outs though.

Anonymous said...

I've always heard that Linux > Windows, but I've generally stuck with Windows. Grass is always greener, you know?

Savage Nugget said...

Congrats on getting the server up and running. :D

I can't proclaim to know much about Linux, but like yourself I've been curious about it. From what I gathered, if you're new to Linux, something like Ubuntu is a good way to go.

No idea about Linux! But glad you got the server up and running!

haha, windows server 2008 on home computer ^^ you can put a fucking AD for your home xD sounds epic

Well Linux Servers are their own animal, but if you know what you're doing they're pretty chill. Just be sure you know how to use SAMBA if you plan to use Windows workstations. Linux is pretty easy going once you got it down. Great post, cheers mate.

Classically Trained Nub said...

My opinion may be bias due to using linux for years now, but it truly is the superior OS. Different distros can be difficult, but if it has the Ubuntu name, you can guarantee simplicity.

now if we could just get more people to read this...

Well, I just migrated from 2k3 to 2k8 this month and it's going well. Win 2k8 sure has some good features.
I use Ubuntu 10.10 at home as my desktop and it's much cleaner to run than windows xp-7
I have never used the Ubuntu server before though. Chuck it in a VMWare or something to test it out.
Will be watching this spot. Good luck!

linux will be harder to learn.. it's not as simple as windows but you should try it at least to learn from it

keep up the good work bro

Rand.oM said...

I'm currently running my laptop on lucid lynx (ubuntu 10.04) and the desktop on mavrick meerkat (ubuntu 10.10)

Couldn't be more satisfied ! It runs so much faster than windoze. and you dont have to buy the hardware at twice the price to have the privilege to use it.

The learning curve is steep but it's worth it!

Unknown said...

No reason why you can't have both. Install a hypervisor. VMWare ESXi is amazing.

The Geeks Paradise said...

It really depends on how deep you want to go into Linux. Ubuntu is a good distro for beginners. I would recommend running Ubuntu just to get a feel for linux and then jumping to Slackware. Slack is, in my opinion, one of the best all around distros.

Aaron said...

So many comments! /bows. Good luck with the server!

TravisTouchdown said...

I'm triple booting ubuntu, XP, and win7 ultimate right now and I think that while Ubuntu might be two steps above XP in terms of overall quality, ease of use, and capability, win7 is easily four steps ahead of XP just because of its stability and amazing user experience. Everything *works*.
