Computer Insurance?

In recent years, as laptop ownership has become more and more mainstream, some people have gone towards purchasing computer insurance to protect their technological investment.

As for me, I've never been tempted to purchase such insurance as the factory warranty is sufficient for me, and I have the ability to open up the laptop or desktop computer and fix myself. When doing so, there's the cost and time factor... does computer insurance ultimately make life easier?

I think it ultimately comes down to the technological ability of the computer owner. If you don't know much, you're better off having a professional service/insurance take care of it. If you are very knowledgeable, it could be more convenient and safe to do it yourself.

What are your thoughts on this?

I don't think more insurance is worth it. It's just companies exploiting this rapidly growing market. People forget the responsibilities of the individual-- and how profoundly important it is to back up your stuff on an external drive! After all, insurance can give you your data back!

I always do it myself didn't need any help by anyone since now :P

I sort of have this form Best Buy.

doesn't seem practical for the home user, but perhaps for businesses.

The standard warranty is fine, since I can fix most problems myself. My mother, on the other hand, recently spend too much money on replacing the bloody hard drive, because her warranty ran out and she has the technological ability of a child.

I really don't need computer insurance, my computer is quite cheap.

wow i hate insurance what a waste of money
hahaha but i guess we need it

Insurance for my laptop might be a good idea. Desktop PCs are fairly easy to fix, but I wouldn't know where to start with a laptop.

Well I just have contents insurance and that covers my pc fine

Most people that get the laptop insurance are using it to get a newer laptop every couple of years. At least that's what I was seeing when I worked retail.

Voacaroo said...

You might be right. I don't buy an insurance when I buy stuff, because I don't want to pay for something I might not use.

i think if its a home pc thats over a £1000 then you should insure it, If its a business comp/s then you should have insurance that covers it any way

My computer is insured under my house insurance before that it was insured under my renters insurance.

Kimokik said...

I agree with you, I don't need to consider the insurance.

Search on the Internet for tutorials and guides to fix the problem, or ask one of your computer skilled friends to take a look at the problem.

Nostalgist said...

as long as you don't own a very expensive system, i believe you don't need insurance for standard pc/laptop ..

Matte said...

Why not? :D

textileengineer said...

It may be useful for servers.

LoneIslander said...

I don't need insurance since I know how to not destroy a computer. All I need is my warranty.

I have a few friends who get insurance on their macs and iphones. Personally i would only get insurance if I was taking my laptop out into public more then i do. Accidents happen alot

Technology insurance I believe would benefit the non-tech savy, average person that owns several computers.

Jim said...

I suppose it also has to do with cash available. As for me, I keep around one technologically gifted friend just in case something goes wrong with my laptop lol.

im careful enough with my lap top that i dont think i would ever buy insurance

NarwhalMinded said...

Eh, my laptops have always died the day the warranty was up anyway. I always would rather spend $1K on a new one than $600 in repairs on my old one.

Gorlotch said...

I've always been tech savvy enough to be able to handle computer issues myself, so I never went with insurance plans

Anonymous said...

I don't think I would go to the length of computer insurance but perhaps if I had a really super expensive system I would consider it

rebekillah said...

hmm..i'll think about it

Sykefu said...

i'm thinking the same way as you. since i can fix like 80% of the problems myself i don't feel like paying any insurance.

KTOTHES said...

I just buy a cheap lappy, Worse comes to worst I'll buy a new one. :D

I think I could fix most problems with my computer myself too (+ internet help) but I can imagine alot of people that would be unable to.

Common sense for me works fine. Factory warranties are the farthest I think anyone should go.

im getting insurance myself

I have had the same laptop for 3 years and the only items that have malfunctioned were the charger and the battery. The battery was just recently. Both of which are cheap/easy fixes. Personally, I wouldn't buy insurance, but I do know how to fix a lot of electronics.

Anonymous said...

Nope, I don't believe in insurances, they always have an excuse to don't fix or replace your electronics...

tigey said...

I need that insurance !

Luigibomb said...

I usually get a 1 year warranty with my laptops due to that any more is EXPANSAAAIVE

What if you stab yourself (or a loved one) with the screwdriver while opening the case?

SpringyB said...

Laptop insurance would be good to have if it covered theft. Warranties cover most basic damage.

thanx for information

Kichuwa said...

If i knew how to assemble a computer I'd do that instead of buying base models.

Dan said...

I built my own comp, so there really isnt insurance onthe whole thing. which sucks. Cause I've had too many problems with my comp, random crap going bad and whatnot. Next time I may just go pre-built :(

Not worth it, I can easily replace my investment for another one to care about insurance

Drackar said...

The idea of insurance is bad...period. they work angles, and in the end, most people pay buttloads of money for nothing, or to find out whatever went wrong isn't covered.

Anonymous said...

I got computer insurance, best investment ever.

CAE.II said...

I agree with you, for my lifestyle, I think computer insurance is completely unnecessary.

i would never get puter insurace, its always gonna cost more than its worth

Tsipise said...

I build my computers, do all maintenance on them, help out friends and family with it. The last learned me that, either you know somebody that can help you, or you take insurance from the local dealer. If you not tech savvy, that is.

Archi said...

well i don't need that kinda insurance. if i smash up my pc, i got enough money to get a new one.

Anonymous said...

i think i am self efficent for computers i dont need insurance

aZZo said...

im the same, im not paying someone to do something i can fix myself

manufacturers warrenty is all you need

i think it does make it more convenient for the regular computer user, but i feel like the insurance/warranties always run out just before your laptop/computer breaks

computer insurance is useless whether you like it or not your pc will be crap in 3-4 years so you replace it so its useless

Meh, do something like me. Take 6 months off or so, learn everything you can about computers, build em, break em, fix em, etc. There ain't a problem I've had that I can't fix, and all my cousins come to me for help xD. I'm the fix up man
