Windows Mobile Messaging (Microsoft Exchange) vs. BlackBerry BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server)

In the enterprise infrastructure, 2 hand held messaging platforms are dominant: Microsoft Exchange and BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES).  Windows Mobile phones and the iPhone use the ActiveSync MS Exchange Server information to sync up with your mailbox, whereas BlackBerry phones use a BES server.

In the current infrastructure I manage, our enterprise phones are BlackBerry devices.  The BES links up with MS Exchange.  When emails are received, they route to both servers.  The main benefit here is if the MS Exchange network account is locked out, the BES continues to be able to send and receive messages.

In terms of being a user, I still preferred the iPhone over BlackBerry as I like the iPhone's OS.  However, from an enterprise point of view, the decision makers seem to be more comfortable with a BES as it has a reputation of being more secure (whether this is true or not is a different story).

What are you experiences and thoughts on this?

I think that the BES seems logical from a security standpoint.

I prefer iphones atm. As far as choosing the difference in BES and such is mostly preference. They all have some sort of security concern

If security is what really matters, I think that's what takes priority.

I only have beginner experience with WMM.
So i can't really add to this.

Looks like a good medium of server exchange.

I also Prefer the iPhone over BlackBerry because of its subtle, yet dominant design and features, which BlackBerrys cannot compete with.

Ishu said...

It depends...is it more secure?

i like the iphone OS too, but apple policy over pirateing and jailbreaking are making me mad

I'd assume that BES is more robust as it's designed for a specific purpose - not a hack like most MS software.

I've only used the BES in my career, and I have no complaints. However, my perspective is bias due to not trying anything else.

Blackberry has their own server so cops cannot read anything sent. Nice Post

I'd like a server like that in my play room

woshdatosh said...

well the propably best "feature" of the ms exchange solution is that you can use nearly every new mobile phone for it. andriod, symbian, ios.
i dont know how is it with bes, just blackberry or some sorted mobiles or not?

JP said...

i can only say that the mainframes used for servers must be inmense :p

i love the blackberry, probably because im too poor for an iphone and besides, my area doesnt play well with the provider needed

DinoHunter said...

I love blackberry!

stoneycase said...

i've used both BB, iphone, and android. sticking with android. the BB is certainly more accepted "professionally" but overall i found the email folder and calendar functions lacking. not to mention the app world problems. iphone is well, iphone. walled gardens suck. hellooo android! (btw their handling of activesync is pretty damn good)

servers cost a lot too dont forget

Astra said...

i want a server too

I love the iphone. If i was running a company, I would just jailbreak all of my workers' iPhones so taht we could run on BES. Im not a fan of microsoft.

dous said...

I will never go mac! but thanks for the post!

Anonymous said...

From an aesthetic point of view, the iPhones are much better... also more intutive. But I have to go ahead and align with the side that says BBs are more secure. They are. Already found exploits in both the iPhone user level end agreements AND in Android OS that likely would never happen on BBs

Secret Guide to Shaving said...

BES would be the best way to go right?

Kartoffeln said...

iPhone has more aplications so I prefer it.

Nico said...

Yeah, the iPhone is more popular due to its combination of a user-friendly OS and open-source, which is also why I prefer it.
