Online Backup: Mozy or Carbonite?

In terms of online backup, there are two front runners: Mozy & Carbonite.

Mozy: http://mozy.com/
Carbonite: http://www.carbonite.com/

Both services require you to install their software on your PC or Mac so that it can do automatic backups of the files you'd like it to save. Mozy offers 2GB worth of backups for free and also has paid MozyHome and MozyPro plans.  Carbonite's subscription includes pricing plans that range from 1 to 3 years.

Does anyone use any of these services?  What are your thoughts on online backup?

i don't use them.
seems like a waist of time, and it's for people who don't know any better, like my mom or something, lol.
i have a couple external hard drives i use to keep all my data on, i don't keep anything on my pc, except my music, which is backed up on two different externals as well :)
a 1tb external is only like $90 now, just makes sense...

Don't use any online backup, thanks for the info though.

Carbonite is my choice

I have a few external hard drives that I use for backup but I realise even those are fragile and could fail. I'm not sure I'd be down with paying for storage, though.

I don't know, for some reason I don't trust online backups. I just like to keep spare hard drives lying around.

CetaPara said...

2GB for free...well it's a good idea but you have to know how much price rakes up with a 1TB and higher backup volume.

I went mozy last time I had a need, but i always end up cancelling after a few weeks :P

That pic looks sick!

Naj said...

hmm... actaully, i'd rather buy an external hard drive than back up my files online. i'm a bit paranoid!

i've used dropbox alittle bit i dunno if its quite the same as mozy and carbonite

cooperlife said...

I prefer Adrive.com

you don't need to download anything.

My father uses Mozy. He seems to be pleased by it.

I do not know

To be honest I don't really trust online back ups, great for random stuff you don't mind people seeing, but if I had to backup documents or passwords I'll stick to memory sticks and usb drives.

Biff Tanner said...

they both suck

Food said...

I don't have anything online worth backing up.

Anonymous said...

They both are unreliable, I don't have any personal experience with them but I've heard they suck.

don't trust the people enough to let them hold my files

Rawr chicken feet. said...

Acronis for backups. just save as a partition.
also its not online.

suzychen said...

I would say carbonite because it sounds cooler. I'm afraid that's the full extent of my input... :/

Online backup is good for extra insurance. But you should always keep a local backup too.

Anonymous said...

Meeeh yeah, I would rather stick to the good old external drive.

You have a good thing going here :)

blinkfan4life said...

mac comes with back up or just get and external heard drive

David Davidson said...

Don't use either of them though I probably should back-up my Macbook soon.

tienstormirk said...

it seems safe but, I feel it would leave your data vulnerable

bigLUCC said...

My online backup is either email or via my website. I mostly just have multiple external/internal hard drives, should probably get a raid going.

I just bought my laptop, and I always get those popups at the bottom right when I start up my computer If I would like some sort of online backup. I just hit "remind me later" and continue on.

Ishu said...

I don´t use backup, but thank you for the info!

havent used either. ill try em out though.

_lycosa said...

Online backup is overrated considering the fact that they may invade your privacy and steal photos/information. Not going to let that happen. Ever.

i do what the first poster says

glen beck seems to rant and rave about carbonite i would to from the money they pay him.

As sweet as cloud backups are, there's nothing like the ability to access your backup WITHOUT the internet. I've got a stack of 2.5" laptop drives that I backup to frequently, and I've gotta say, it's pretty convenient!

miecak said...

I only backup the essentials, so dropbox is enough for me.

Admin said...

I prefer to make my own backup on my serveur :D

i go for whichever one advertises the fuck out whatever radio station i listen to.

no way im backing up my stuff unless the servers are in MY house. Thats just asking to get owned in the face.

LivingChaos said...

I just use dropbox for files I want to make sure to keep.

Michael Casspir said...

Yeah - physical drives are more secure - unplug it, and it sits in a drawer.

I'm not a fan of online back up, it looks and sounds good on paper but in practice is really impractical

MistahDrama said...

I totally agree with _lycosa. Online backup has its perks and its downsides privacy invasion being the main one id rather stick to external drive(s)

Anonymous said...

I am impressed by your blog

Harrysoon said...

I do all my backups myself.

ramrod360 said...

I've heard of these, but i'm quite paranoid about my files being stolen like the fellow who posted before me.

Izzie said...

i actually use dropbox for basic stuff, especially transferring info between work and home comps.
all my really important shiz is backed up on disk and my external hard-drive.
I've lost a lot of crap one too many times, if it wasn't obvious.

niceonice said...

I do not use any backup servers. The free program I might give a try.

Alucard said...
